My dad probably won’t admit to this, but he is a sentimental softie. He has been keeping my very first toy safe for me for years. It is a tiny wind up toy in the shape of an old phonograph. I’m not sure why my first toy was something small enough for me to choke one, but I am not one to question the practices of two people that have brought up so many children (except for when it comes to their selection of food, but that’s another story).
I don’t remember playing with that toy, but I do remember several that are no longer in my possession. I remember a red-headed Cabbage Patch doll from my papaw that I regretfully gave away (what was I thinking?!). I also remember a white stuffed bear that hung around my bedroom for years. I can remember a pink bicycle that my cousin Anna Dell bought for me. I had several memorable toys, but none more memorable that my little computer. I don’t remember the name of it or even who made it, but, as my father will attest, it was my favorite toy of all time.
The little computer is tucked away in a trunk where I store certain keepsakes. The back piece that holds in the batteries is missing, but it’s nothing a little black time and some engineering won’t be able to fix. I use to drive my dad crazy with it. To this day he claims he sometimes hears the words, “Please choose an activity,” in his sleep. It was a learning system–a very early learning system, that helped you learn to spell by playing hangman and helped you learn your multiplication tables just by making a game out of getting the answers right.
I don’t remember the day I got it, but I think it was a Christmas gift from Santa. I really wish I could remember what prompted Mom to get it for me, but, sadly, I probably never will know. What I do know is that while it did get on their nerves at times, I think my parents secretly enjoyed watching me learn using it. It’s strange now to think of the little handheld devices that kids have available to them when I had to pack around a brick of a thing everywhere I went, but boy did I love hauling that thing around!
